This page is a guide on how to survive in the Betweenlands once you have entered the dimension. If you need to know how to get to the Betweenlands, visit the How to get there page. Also, if you do not want to be spoiled too much, it is advised to only read the 'Getting Started' section of this guide.

The first thing you should know about surviving in this dimension is this: It will not be nearly as easy to survive in the Betweenlands as it is to in the Overworld. It's much harder to move, more dangerous mobs will attack you, some flora is dangerous to touch, and you must always be aware of not only your hunger and health bar, but also your Decay bar.

Getting Started Edit

There are certain items that you should not take into the dimension. You should not take any food or potions from the Overworld, for once you enter the dimension all non-Betweenlands food and potions (sans Rotten Flesh, which is itself unsustainable) will turn into Rotten Food and Tainted Potions respectively, which are far from sustainable. Do not take any torches, for attempting to place them in the dimension will cause them to turn into Damp Torches, which do not provide light. A decent weapon should be brought inside, but nothing particularly valuable, for weapons not from the dimension are diminished in effectiveness when inside. For example, a Diamond Sword while in the Betweenlands is not even as good as a Weedwood Sword from the dimension. Clocks, Compasses, Beds, and Flint and Steel will not function here either, and thus should not be brought.

Take note of the biome and features surrounding your Portal Tree.

When you first enter, you will want to realize your surroundings. If you spawn in either a Deep Waters or Sludge Plains biome, it is highly advised to get out of there as soon as possible. Not only do both biomes lack the necessary materials to get started, but the Deep Waters contain schools of hungry Anglers and the Sludge Plains contain multiple different and rather powerful creatures that should not be fought until proper equipment has been obtained.

Once you have found yourself in either a Coarse Islands, Patchy Islands, or Swamplands biome, you should start looking for two types of trees in particular. The primary one you should find is the Weedwood Tree, which contains wood that can be turned into planks to act as an alternative to normal wood from the Overworld. The vines growing around the smaller trees are Poison Ivy; you should avoid these vines as they will poison you should you touch them. The second tree you should look for is the Sap Tree, which when mined drop Balls of Sap that can be used as a primary Decay bar restoration source; these balls of sap can also be found in pots and chests.

If in a Marsh biome, you should note some extra things. A Marsh is slightly harder to live in than the other three biomes. The Weedwood Trees are rarer and Sap Trees do not spawn at all. Instead of Sap Trees, one should look for Weeping Blue flowers. These flowers can be indicated that the fact that they are blue and drip 'tears'. These flowers will provide Weeping Blue Petals, which can be used as an alternative and more effective consumable to Balls of Sap, but are harder to come by in large quantities. In addition to this, the Marsh is home to Gas Clouds, deadly entities that drift towards players to suffocate them, and Peat Mummies, very powerful undead monsters that rise out of the ground to hunt down players with sudden and extreme speed. If one is to encounter one of these horrors, they should run far, far away immediately, for they have no chance of defeating them at this stage.

Another thing one should look out for is Mud. Mud is a dark brown block that can be hard to identify at times, but once you stand on it it will cause you to sink into the block. One can try to escape the mud simply by tapping or holding the spacebar, and it can be easy to get out of as long as you're aware of it.

There is one more plant that you should look out for: The Nettle. It deals basic damage like a Cactus when touched, but if you don't realize what you are standing on quick enough you may take more damage than you can warrant.

The best way to get a miniature house started in the Betweenlands is to hollow out the inside of a small Weedwood Tree. This will provide you with a good deal of Weedwood and affordable space where you can get situated. Of course, should you want to build your own house out of one of the basic materials such as Weedwood Planks, it will work just as well, albeit take longer to set up.

After this, make a Weedwood Crafting Table out of the planks, place it, and use it to make a Weedwood Door which you can place at the entrance of your home. You may want to craft a Weedwood Chest to store some items. You should also craft Weedwood Sticks and use them as well as more planks to make basic Weedwood Tools and possibly a Weedwood Shield. This equipment will get you started with mining things from the Betweenlands as well as warding off and attacking mobs.

It is important that the player gets a Moss Bed as soon as possible as sometimes the player will respawn away from the portal if they die in the Betweenlands, and this will prove very frustrating as the player will have to run through Mud with no armor, no food, and no good weapons simply to find their portal. A Moss Bed is made of three Weedwood Planks and three Moss, the latter of which is harvestable using Syrmorite Shears. Once Syrmorite Shears are acquired the player should immediately try to get a Moss Bed and place it in their home, and use it to set their spawn point as the Moss Bed can be used at any time (there is currently no day-night cycle in the Betweenlands). Other Moss blocks/items can be used to craft the Moss Bed but the shearable Moss block on the surface is generally the easiest and safest to obtain.

Staying inside a secure house should be enough protection from the creatures surrounding the lands to keep them away for the time being. But you are not out of danger yet, and there is still much to do in order to become more accustomed to the dimension and increase your survivability.

Exploration Edit

In order to gain more materials, one must of course explore the area around them more efficiently while braving the dangers within. One of the first things you may want to check for is immediate food:

  • The Swamplands are covered in two types of mushrooms: Black Hat Mushrooms and Flathead Mushrooms. Such mushrooms can be harvested and will provide minimal amounts of hunger points, but will also inflict the negative status effect that will increase the rate it goes down. These mushrooms serve as a common but not too sustaining food source, and do have an advantage over many other foods in that Food Sickness does not affect them. However, they should only be consumed if you eat large quantities of them at a time and there is no other food alternative available.

    Patchy Islands can occasionally contain Giant Bulb-Capped Mushrooms, with smaller Bulb-Capped Mushrooms growing around them. When harvested, these mushrooms can also be eaten, and although they do cause trippy effects when consumed, these effects are minor and the hunger restoration is more effective. Of course, these mushrooms are harder to come by than the other two.
  • Silt Crabs can be found crawling around on Silt Beaches. They will snip you before attempting to run away, but as long as they are not in a swarm they are easy to deal with. If you are successful in killing some, they will drop Silt Crab Claws, which can be eaten. They can also be crafted into Crabsticks, which restore more hunger than the claws.
  • Swamp Kelp is a water plant that can be found in water bodies, and can be harvested and grown like Sugar Cane. When cooked in a furnace, it can be eaten for decent sustenance.
  • Mire Snails, Blood Snails, Frogs, and Anglers drop raw meat, which can be eaten as is or cooked so that they restore hunger more effectively. However, both Blood Snails and Anglers are hostile and may be difficult to face at the current time, and there is one Frog variety that is poisonous to touch.
  • Weeping Blue Petals act as food, as they restore both hunger and decay. They can also be found sometimes in pots throughout the dimension, as well as within Underground Oases, so they are not restricted to Marshes.

Beware that, for most foods, if you eat too much of the same type of food too quickly, its Food Sickness level will increase, eventually to the point where the food barely provides any sustenance compared to before. Thus, it is a good idea to look for and consume multiple sources of food. Black Hat and Flathead Mushrooms, Balls of Sap, and Chiromaw Wings are exempt from this mechanic.

One should also go after some of the stones found in the dimension. Betweenstone is found commonly anywhere just below the surface and can be mined with a Weedwood Pickaxe. You can use it to craft a Sulfur Furnace with which you can cook and smelt items like a vanilla Furnace. If you surround a Sulfur Furnace with eight more Betweenstone in the crafting table, you can make a Dual Sulfur Furnace, which has two smelting slots, acting as two furnaces in one block. This can help to conserve space and smelt more items at once.

However, don't expect to be making better tools out of this Betweenstone. The next tool tier are Bone Tools, crafted using Slimy Bones which can only be found fossilized deeper underground or dropped from Swamp Hags, zombie-like mutants which are only found in certain biomes under normal circumstances. You should look for these when you can, as they can also be crafted into Bone Armor and a Bone Shield which can provide some much-needed protection. One can also craft Lurker Skin Armor using Lurker Skin, which is dropped from Lurkers, crocodile-like creatures found in large water bodies. This armor, while not as protective and possibly more dangerous to get than Bone Armor, is more durable and will provide increased maneuverability and breathing in water when worn.

You can also find Cragrock in Coarse Islands and Deep Waters biomes. This rock will be useful for crafting the Mortar, the Pestle, and the Alembic, which will be more important later on for grinding and distilling items. Also, both Cragrock and Betweenstone can be crafted into decorative blocks, including slabs, stairs, and walls, which may be nice for building and expanding one's house.

One of the primary ingredients in many recipes of the mod is Swamp Reed. These plants grow similarly to Sugar Cane and can be found primarily in the lusher biomes. They can be harvested and either crafted into Reed Rope or smelted into Dried Swamp Reed. Reed Rope is used in many crafting recipes, including the Weedwood Bow (a quicker alternative to the normal Bow) and Weedwood Buckets. Dried Swamp Reed can be crafted into Thatch, a decorative block, as well as Reed Donuts, which are a relatively efficient food source.

If you want to use the Weedwood Bow, you will need specific types of arrows. The typical arrow is the Angler Tooth Arrow, which can be crafted with a Weedwood Stick, a Dragonfly Wing (dropped from Dragonflies, insects that fly around in Coarse Islands), and an Angler Tooth (dropped from Anglers). These arrows can also be crafted with Poison Glands (Dropped from Blood Snails and poisonous Frogs) to make Poison Angler Tooth Arrows, which apply poison in addition to the normal damage. Both of these arrows can also be found rather commonly in Pots of Chance, which are underground or in naturally generating structures.

You will find that even your tools will begin to corrode over time. As they corrode, they will become less effective. To temporarily restore your tools to clean status, you will have to obtain a Purifier. Inside the Purifier's GUI, you can put your corroded tool with Sulfur and water (obtained from Weedwood Water Buckets). After just a few moments the tool will be clean again for the time being.

A brave explorer ventures into the dark caves of the dimension.

Once you feel you are ready, you will want to look for the Betweenlands Caverns. Some biomes contain entrances to such caves, but if you are unsuccessful in finding an entrance digging down should find you a cave (never digging straight down is still a valid concept, as the caves can be very large). These caves contain lots of Betweenstone, unique flora, occasional ravines, bat-like creatures known as Chiromaws, and Stalactites, among the common appearances of Swamp Hags and Wights, angry spirits that are powerful but can be avoided by sneaking when nearing them. You will find a variety of ores down in the upper layer of these Caverns:

  • Sulfur Ore is a rather common and important resource down here, as it is the Betweenlands equivalent of Coal. It appears yellow and will give off potion-like particles. Sulfur can be used to make Sulfur Torches, which provide light even in the dimension. It can also be used as a very efficient fuel source not only for furnaces, but for utility blocks such as the Purifier and Animator.
  • Slimy Bone Ore is a fossil ore that can be found relatively easily. It drops Slimy Bones which can be used for the next tier of tools, shield and armor as mentioned above.
  • Octine Ore is easily recognizable, as the ore glows brightly orange, emitting flame particles. It can only be mined with a Bone Pickaxe or higher tier. It is a partial equivalent to the Overworld's iron; it can be smelted into Octine Ingots and be used to make Octine Tools, which are a tier up from Bone Tools. In addition to this, the Octine Sword has a chance to set mobs on fire. However, it CANNOT be used to make armor. The ingots can be used in some other recipes as well, including Octine Arrows which can set mobs on fire when shot.
  • Syrmorite Ore is a deep blue color and shares partial equivalence to iron with Octine. It can also only be mined with a Bone Pickaxe or higher tier, and must also be smelted into Syrmorite Ingots. These ingots can be used to make Syrmorite Armor, a tier up from Bone Armor, but CANNOT be used in tools. The ingots can also be used in making other utility blocks, including the Compost Bin which may be useful by this point if you are ready to start farming.

You will want to look out for Thorns while down in these caves; they grow like vines and will damage you if you touch them, like Nettles. There are also occasional Underground Oases, patches of flora underground containing valuable natural resources such as Weeping Blues and Bulb-Capped Mushrooms. They also contain a spawner that can spawn one of five different dangerous creatures, which can mean trouble but can also be utilized in the future for farming.

In addition, while rare (not yet implemented in the latest version), you may find a Tar Pool Dungeon within the caves, which spawns Tar Beasts regularly. These lumbering beasts will have multiple different attacks and are likely to be too powerful at the current time to face; however, if you can manage them, they will drop Tar Drip and rarely Tar Beast Hearts, which can be used in making Tar Minions to assist in combat, a boss summoning item known as Mummy Bait, and a Weedwood Rowboat with which to traverse the waters of the dimension more effectively.

While down in the caves you will also find, on occasion, groups of Pots of Chance. These pots can be broken by hand and can contain a variety of items, from common resources such as Sulfur and Reed Rope to rarities such as Item Scrolls (can be animated in an Animator to get a random item) and Basilisk Arrows (a special type of arrow that can 'petrify' mobs). However, they also have a chance to spawn a Termite, a pesky insect which can become very dangerous in swarms.

Some parts of the caves are known as Limestone Caverns, which have their Betweenstone replaced by Limestone. Primarily a block used for the crafting of decorative blocks, Limestone can also be grinded into Limestone Flux, which can be used to double the output of Octine Ore and Syrmorite Ore that is smelted in the furnaces.

If you venture deep enough into the caves, you will enter a new cave layer, known as the Lake Cavern layer. This layer contains a new stone, Pitstone (can be crafted into decorative blocks) and pools of Stagnant Water, and the bottom half of it is completely submerged in Swamp Water. It also contains the most valuable of the ores in the dimension:

  • Scabyst Ore is a pale bluish color and is a tad less rare than Valonite. It can be mined with any pickaxe and drops Scabyst. Scabyst can be 'coated' on Betweenlands tools to temporarily keep their corrosion level from going down, freezing it at the level it was at when coated but making it unable to be purified to reset its level until the coating is depleted. Anywhere between 1 and 8 Scabyst can be crafted with a tool, and each piece provides a small value of coating.
  • Valonite Ore is a light pinkish color, and is rather rare. It can only be mined with an Octine Pickaxe or higher tier, and drops Valonite Shards. Valonite is the Betweenlands equivalent of Diamond; it can be crafted into Valonite Tools and Valonite Armor, which are the best craftable tiers of equipment. It can also be crafted into the Sickle, an item important in harvesting the Plant Items needed in Herblore. (For the full details on Herblore, visit its page).
  • Life Crystal Ore is the most unique of all of the ores. It is a white crystal that only spawns as part of stalactite-like pitstone spikes which can be found submerged underwater. These white crystals are difficult to find, but when mined (with an Octine Pickaxe or higher tier) they drop Life Crystals, which can be used in animating within an Animator as well as in automating parts of the functions that Mortars and Infusers have.

Once you obtain the required materials, to make navigating caves easier, one should craft Caving Rope. This rope creates a trail behind the player with glowing anchor points that can be easily tracked and cleaned up, allowing them to retrace their steps.

There are plenty of small structures to find in the dimension, such as Marsh Ruins, Mud Ruins, Shrine Dungeons, or Underground Ruins. They may contain pots or Weedwood Chests with loot, and maybe even a spawner that spawns dangerous hostile mobs. There is a very large structure known as the Cragrock Tower, which contains multiple pots, chests and spawners, and is a prime place to find valuable and rare items while not being too hard to find, but contains multiple rooms of increasing difficulty. There is a single massive dungeon structure that is central to progression, the Wight Fortress; one of the mod's bosses can be fought here, but you should take time to become more powerful in the dimension before taking it on for it contains multiple spawners and traps. There will be even more comprehensive structures to explore in the future, such as Tribe Settlements and Ancient Temples.

Expanding the Home Edit

Expanding one's home allows them to take advantage of Farming and Herblore (not currently implemented) as included in the dimension.

Some of the most satisfactory blocks that can be used in expanding the home are Weedwood Chip Paths and Walkways. Weedwood Chip Paths can be placed on the tops of blocks, while Walkways are most affectively placed across water bodies and to bridge two spaces. Both provide small speed boosts when stood upon, making them handy pathways to travel to and from parts of one's home.

There are a variety of farms you can set up. The easiest farms to set up are Swamp Reed and Swamp Kelp farms. You simply have to place the corresponding items on Mud (Mud for Swamp Reeds must be next to water, and Mud for Swamp Kelp MUST be submerged, preferably by about three blocks to maximize growth). They will grow like sugar cane and can simply be harvested when grown enough.

Primary crops are a little bit harder to set up and maintain. They must be grown on composted Dug Swamp Dirt, Dug Swamp Grass, Dug Purified Swamp Dirt, or Dug Purified Swamp Grass. To obtain this, first right-click Swamp Grass, Swamp Dirt, or Purified Swamp Dirt with any Betweenlands shovel, turning the block into the respective dug block. Then, fill the dug hole with Compost. Compost can be obtained by composting compostable items in the Compost Bin. Once filled with compost, the block can be planted with the following crops:

  • White Pear Bush: Planted with White Pear Seeds. When harvested, it will drop White Pears, which are edible and can be crafted into other food items to increase their sustenance.

    Fun Fact: Yellow Dotted Fungus is actually an immature Sporeling, and it will in fact turn into one if left to grow before being harvested at the right time.

    Yellow Dotted Fungus: Planted with Spores. When harvested, it will drop Yellow Dotted Fungus, which is edible and provides great sustenance.
  • Aspectrus Plant (not currently implemented): Planted with Aspectrus Seeds. It must grow on a Rubber Tree Plank Fence and must also be imbued with an Aspect Vial of your choosing to grow. When harvested, it will drop Aspectrus Fruit, which is imbued with the same aspect used to grow the plant and can be used in making Infusions.

Do note that all of these crops will consume the compost in their dug hole after three crop harvests, and are in danger of decay if not planted on composted Dug Purified Swamp Dirt or Grass. The composted block underneath them can decay, which can stop their growth; and if they are mature and unharvested when this happens, the plant will decay as well, making it drop nothing but seeds. Decayed plants and composted blocks can be temporarily cured using Plant Tonic.

There is currently one breedable mob in the Betweenlands: The Mire Snail. Mire Snails can be attracted and bred using Sludge Balls. However, instead of producing a baby snail, they will lay a Snail Egg. This egg will sit still for a period of time before hatching into another full grown Mire Snail. Of course, to keep these snails protected and under locks, one can fence them in. Blood Snails cannot be bred.

Finally, Rubber Trees can be tapped. Rubber Trees are found relatively commonly in Swamplands biomes and can also be grown with Rubber Tree Saplings. If you place a Weedwood or Syrmorite Bucket on a naturally grown Rubber Tree Log (along with having a Reed Rope in the inventory, which will consume it), you will place a Rubber Tap on the log. The tap will eventually fill with sap, and Syrmorite Rubber Taps will function faster. When full it can be broken or collected with an additional bucket, yielding a Rubber Bucket. Smelting a Rubber Bucket made from Weedwood will directly yield Rubber Balls and destroy the bucket in the process, while using a Syrmorite Bucket will result in a Syrmorite Bucket with Solid Rubber, which can be right-clicked to separate the Rubber Ball and the empty bucket. Rubber Balls can be used in making Rubber Blocks as well as in Rubber Boots and Dentrothyst Vials (not yet implemented). Rubber Boots will allow one to traverse Mud and other slowing blocks without being slowed or sinking, making many areas of the Betweenlands much easier to traverse.

This concludes the Basic Guide to Survival. There is still plenty of content in the Betweenlands yet to be discovered and yet to be implemented, so go on and explore the mod. You may find yourself surprised. And possibly very spooked.
